Don’t you just love phonics??! My son has started school this year so we are learning all sorts of new things. When I say we, I mean I’m learning too! It’s quite a while since I was in primary school & teaching has changed a lot since then.
When I was learning, it was all parrot fashion & repetitive. To be fair it did work because I can still recall my times tables remarkably fast when I need too. I need to start singing my shopping list then I might remember what’s on it! (Seen as how I usually forget it when I go shopping!)
But everything has changed, and it has changed A LOT! We now walk around the house singing ‘Jelly & Jam’ to the tune of Jingle bells! ‘Jelly & jam, Jelly & jam… la la la!!’ It completely confuses me but my son gets it. I mean he really gets it. To whoever has researched this & rolled it out to schools – thank you.
He always corrects me when I get it wrong too. If I sing the wrong words or do the wrong action, he is always quick to correct me & make sure I do it right. Even his little sister is joining in! At 19 months old, she does the actions to the phonics & claps along with the songs.
I think getting them to sing the song though is a fantastic idea. I can still remember songs from when I was growing up & I can sing the right words too! I remember singing to Kylie & Jason, Rick Astley and so on.. (I’m feeling really old now!) Fortunately, now Rick Astley has made a comeback, the younger generation might have an idea who I’m talking about!
I really hope he continues to enjoy learning as much as he is now. It’s all done through play & investigating, but he loves it & it’s really captured his imagination. Hopefully it will continue throughout his school life. I have a feeling though it could a little ‘offline’ as he gets older! Oh well, we’ll just cross that bridge when we come to it (with fingers crossed!)
